The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness after
partial arthroplasty and internal fixation with plate sliding screw in elderly with trochanteric
fracture.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, retrospective, analytical, transversal
and a cohort study was conducted in the Orthopedics and traumatology service at the
Hospital Essalud IV “Víctor Lazarte Echegaray”, between January 2010 and December
2015. 50 patients were included over age 65 with trochanteric fracture, which were treated
surgically. The first cohort (25 patients) was treated partial arthroplasty and the second
cohort (25 patients) with internal fixation with plate sliding screw. The effectiveness was
measured using the quality of life with the Short Form-12 (SF - 12), late morbidity was
measured if the patient had pain, dislocation or acetabular erosion;
and the length of hospital stay.
RESULTS: Patients undergoing partial arthroplasty , it was determined that 16 patients (
64 %) had better quality of life , 20 patients (80 %) had late morbidity and also the average
hospital stay was 4 days . Patients undergoing internal fixation with screw slide plate , it
was determined that 18 patients ( 72 %) had better quality of life , 15 patients (60 %) had
late morbidity and also the average hospital stay was about 3 days ( 2.68 days).
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that patients undergoing plate sliding
screw get better effectiveness of life compared with partial arthroplasty.
