| es_PE |
dc.description.abstract | In previous studies investigating the association between preoperative CEA and outcome of the disease, it has been suggested that patients with a higher level of CEA present worse survival. Other studies question the value of these antigen levels as an independent prognostic factor, to clarify these discrepancies this study. OBJECTIVE: Establish the predictive value of preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen in the 5-year survival of patients with resectable colorectal cancer treated at Regional Institute of Neoplastic Diseases of the North. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed 243 patients who underwent resection for colorectal cancer and followed for at least one year or until his death . Patients were classified according to the level of preoperative CEA less than or equal to 5 ng / ml (group A) were compared with those with a higher CEA level 5 ng / ml (group B). RESULTS: The CEA has predictive value for overall survival (p = 0.027). During the 48 months average follow-up period, the actuarial survival rate with CEA <5 ng / ml was 65.7% and was significantly higher than the rate of those with a CEA level> 5ng/ml was 0.99%. CONCLUSIONS: The CEA has predictive value if the 5-year survival of patients with resected colorectal cancer. | en_US |
