dc.description.abstract | Objective: To determine whether caffeine consumption is a risk factor for
osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Methods: A case-control study was conducted in postmenopausal women who
attended the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo between June and November
2023. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select 63 cases with
osteoporosis and 126 controls without the disease. Various variables were
evaluated, including caffeine intake, age, body mass index (BMI), education,
smoking, alcohol consumption, calcium intake, hormone replacement therapy,
and physical activity.
Results: A significant difference in age was found between the groups with and
without osteoporosis (54.79 ± 3.71 vs. 51.95 ± 4.78; p = 0.001), but not in
education or BMI. Regarding lifestyle habits, no significant differences were
observed in smoking, alcohol consumption, hormone replacement therapy, or
physical activity. However, there was a significantly lower prevalence of
osteoporosis in patients who consumed calcium (71.43% vs. 15.87%; p = 0.001).
Although caffeine consumption did not show a significant association, a slightly
higher proportion was identified in the osteoporosis group (28.57% vs. 16.67%;
p = 0.057).
Conclusion: This study suggests that caffeine intake is not a significant risk
factor for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women | es_PE |
